How can we help?

Answers to common questions about using SwapUs.

How swapping works

What is a swap?

A swap is two linked sessions between two people: one where you teach them a skill you know, and one where they teach you a skill you want. Every exchange on SwapUs is a swap. See How it works for the whole journey.

Why can’t I just learn without teaching?

Because SwapUs is built on reciprocity. Everyone brings something and everyone takes something, so nobody is doing anyone a favour and both people have a reason to show up prepared.

That’s also why there are no credits or payments: the lesson you teach is what you give in return for the lesson you get. If you think you have nothing to teach, look again — a language, a tool you use at work, cooking, a sport or a study technique can all be someone else’s goal.

Can I just teach, without learning anything?

Not on SwapUs. Every member lists at least one skill they want to learn, and every swap includes a session where you are the learner.

Is there anything to pay, or any credits or points?

Swapping is free: no credits or points, and no money ever passes between members. An optional Premium pass (from ₹9/day, no auto-renewal) adds extras like more open requests and AI uses — learning itself is never paywalled. See refunds & cancellations.

Accounts

Who can join SwapUs?

You must be at least 16 years old. Sign up with your email, then complete a short onboarding where you add at least one skill you can teach and at least one skill you want to learn. Both are required.

Do I need separate accounts to learn and teach?

No. Every account teaches and learns. All your requests and both sessions of every swap are in one place: My swaps.

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from Settings. Upcoming sessions and open requests are cancelled. Sessions that are in progress, awaiting confirmation or disputed need to be finished or resolved first. See the Privacy Policy for what is removed and what is kept in de-identified form.

Matching

How are matches chosen?

Someone is shown as a match only when the swap works both ways: they teach a skill you want to learn, and they want to learn a skill you teach. Matches are then ranked with explainable rules: experience levels, shared languages, overlapping availability, session format and reliability. Every suggestion lists the reasons for and against it.

What if nobody matches me yet?

A two-way match needs someone on the other side, and the community is still growing. The quickest fixes:

  • Add more skills you want to learn, including related ones.
  • Add more skills you can teach — everyday skills count.
  • Widen your availability or add another language you speak.

You can also browse all skills on the Explore page to see what people offer.

What does “self-reported” or “verified” mean?

Skill levels are self-reported by default. A verified badge appears only after the platform owner has reviewed evidence (for example a portfolio or certificate) that supports the claim.

Swaps and sessions

How do I propose a swap?

From a match, choose the skill you want from them and the skill you’ll teach in return (one they’ve listed as wanting to learn). Describe your goal, choose a session length and propose a time for each of the two sessions. They can accept, decline or suggest different times.

How are the two sessions scheduled?

Each half of a swap has its own time: one session where they teach you and one where you teach them. Both sessions are the same length (15 minutes to 4 hours), both times must be between 1 hour and 90 days ahead, and they can’t overlap. Once accepted, each session is confirmed, cancelled or disputed on its own.

Where do sessions take place?

Inside SwapUs. Once a swap is accepted, chat, voice and video calls open between you and your partner, and both sessions happen there. There are no in-person sessions and no outside meeting links (like Zoom or Google Meet), so you never need to share a phone number or social media account.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel an upcoming session with a short reason. Cancelling less than 24 hours before the start counts as late and is recorded against your reliability. There are no fees. Cancelling one session doesn’t cancel the other half of the swap, so agree with your partner how to reschedule.

How does a session get marked complete?

After a session starts, both people confirm it happened. If one person confirms and the other neither confirms nor disputes within 72 hours of the end time, it completes automatically. The swap is complete when both of its sessions are.

The other person didn’t show up. What can I do?

From 15 minutes after the scheduled start you can report a no-show from the session page. A person reviews it.

How do disputes work?

Either participant can open a dispute after a session starts and before it completes. A person reviews it and decides whether the session took place. While it’s open, the session can’t complete automatically.

When are ratings shown?

An average rating appears only after at least 3 different people have left feedback.

Community and anonymity

Are community posts really anonymous?

Yes, to other members. Posts and comments show a random alias, never your profile, and aliases aren’t reused across threads. Anonymity does not necessarily extend to the platform operator: in rare, serious cases identity can be disclosed through an audited, owner-only process. See the Privacy Policy.

Why is my post pending?

Community text and images are checked by an automated moderation provider before publication. Most posts go live right away; some are held for human review.

Can I edit or delete my posts?

Yes. You can find and manage your own posts in the community section. Other members can’t see that they are yours.

Safety and reporting

How do I report someone or something?

Use the report option on a profile, message, post or comment. Reports go to a moderation queue. Content that receives several independent reports may be hidden while it’s reviewed.

Can I block someone?

Yes. Blocking stops someone from messaging you or sending you requests.

I disagree with a moderation decision.

You can appeal decisions about your own content. Appeals are reviewed by a person.

Can I share my phone number, email or social media?

No. For your safety, keep all contact inside SwapUs. Phone numbers, email addresses, links, social media accounts and handles, and requests to talk somewhere else can’t be sent in messages, swap requests, notes, posts or your profile.

Each attempt is a warning, and SwapUs tells you how many you have. After 3 warnings, the next attempt pauses your chat, calls and swap requests for 24 hours. You can still sign in and browse while paused. You can see your standing any time in Settings.

Someone asked me to talk outside SwapUs. What should I do?

Don’t share your details. Keep the conversation in SwapUs’s chat and calls, and report the person from their profile or the message. If you are ever in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.

AI features

Does SwapUs use AI?

Optionally. AI can help suggest learning roadmaps, explain why a two-way match fits, draft profile text and similar tasks. AI output is always labelled as AI-generated.

Do I have to use AI features?

No. AI features are off until you opt in from Settings, and you can turn them off again at any time.

Can AI be wrong?

Yes. AI suggestions can be inaccurate or incomplete. Treat them as a starting point and use your own judgement.

Does AI decide bans or disputes?

Never. Account restrictions, skill verification and dispute outcomes are decided by people.

Privacy

What data do you collect?

Your profile, skills you teach and want to learn, availability, swaps and sessions, feedback, messages, community content, moderation records and AI usage logs. The Privacy Policy explains each one and why.

Is my anonymous content used to train AI?

No. Anonymous community posts are not used for AI training or to profile you.

How long do you keep moderation data?

Automated moderation category scores are deleted after 90 days by default. The platform owner can configure this period.

Still need help?

For problems with a person, a session or community content, use the in-app reporting tools on the relevant page. Reports go straight to the moderation queue.

The platform owner’s contact details will appear here once they’re configured.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
